Gun question

Postby Gungnir » Mon Jun 11, 2018 6:56 am

Yesterday, on our field trip to the island of Schiermonnikoog, I stumbled across a modest display of WWII memorabilia - quite suiting, since the island was the last bit of Weastern Europe to be liberated, mid June '45.

According to the sign this ougt to be a flak. It came off a merchant vessel.

To me, it doesn't look flak, and considering it came from a merchant vessel I think a regular deck gun is more likely.

Anybody nautically inclined enough to shed some light on this?

Don't know. It could still be a heavy FlaK gun but it's hard to be sure. It was probably intended for a dual purpose role anyway. The Germans recycled a lot of weapons from other countries & this very much looks like a WWI era weapon.

It's not dissimilar to this, which is a German 7.7cm FlaK L35 Modele 1916 gun from WWI. It isn't the same model though, the top mounted recuperator and other barrel fitting are missing from your example.

Norwegian L45 M16 7.5cm AAG from the 1920s.
