Egyptian cavalry in the Sudan

Postby ochoin » Thu Aug 10, 2017 1:48 pm

I really want to add an Egyptian cavalry unit of some type to my Mahdist wargame forces.

In 1/72, there’s not much available. I have, with some difficulty acquired this set: http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Review.aspx?id=1879

Gendarmes in blue? Near enough to regular cavalry? Some type of Bashi Bazoouk?

It’s also difficult to find any uniform information. I have seen wargames’ figures of Egyptian cavalry in white (though with the regulation jacket rather than the zouave-style one) but with inexplicable mid blue trousers. Where does this come from??

Any advice is welcome as I really want to start painting.

I'd just paint them in the same uniforms as the infantry (I'd just assume uniform variation was too hard at the time)

Too late! (with apologies to General Gordon).

The 10 figure unit is already painted. I hit a purple patch.

Blue was the winter uniform colour and the colour the officers tended to wear all year.
