How I Deal With Whiners

Postby Der Alte Fritz » Mon Nov 25, 2013 5:49 pm

There is a fellow in our gaming group who seems to whine about everything. We play a SYW game and he complains that I have to many grenadiers in my Prussian army (yea right, you think?). We play Napoleonics and on the very first turn he starts complaining about some aspect of the rules. He is an expert on all things Napoleonic, of course, because he re-enacts with the 21e de Ligne, so he must know what he is talking about.

<wh>

We start playing the Napoleonic game and Mr. Whiner complains that the British have too many riflemen on the table.

So how do I deal with Mr. Whiner? I just paint more of the stuff that he does not like, just to annoy him even more.

<b10>

If he doesn't like the 95th Rifles, then I paint another dozen or so. He doesn't like Prussian grenadiers, I paint another battalion or two of grenadiers.

I wonder if he will ever catch on?

It's not my house or game venue, so I can not invite him to leave. However, sandpaper and guerilla tactics seem to be the only way to deal with this.

I have a friend with a similar attitude to force composition.

Properly nice bloke, not a 'problem' player, but if he lost a game... it was because of what you brought to the table.

Not 'cause he advanced his Bondi out of all supporting distance and the rest of his warband had to watch helplessly as they were chopped down.
No, it was your missile/melee ratio that was 'wrong'.

Thing is... I think it's funny. Whatever element he's got a cob-on about - I'll field more of them.
OR - sometimes I'll go the other way, field none of them, and see if I can turn him over anyway. (That's priceless, when that comes off.)

My attitude is that if somebody's going to be a pwecious ickle pwincess, I reserve the right to be amused by their foot-stamping.

You are too much of a gentleman.

Agreed, do some 60th, KGL, Brunswick Oels. Point out that it isn't hard to balance the brits by painting up a few Bn of redcoats.

But if this is as persistent as you say, a gentle tug on his arm on the way into the lavatory and the gentle murmur in his ear "If you dont shut your fucking mouth, I will do it for you" is often the only hint he will need.

Think of him dead.

"The corpse of a dead enemy always smells good". Vitellius, I think.

A little harsh but it does it for me.

Sorry, I mis-read that as a black belt in a marital art. Although thinking about it, if you're heading for the heads, it's probably good to know he doesn't have one of those either. :o

Believe me, Grizz, I have thought of doing that from time to time, but I guess that I am too reserved to give it a try. I take more pleasure out of playing with his mind. Maybe I will bring some Portuguese Cacadores to the next game.

Actually, I have 3 companies of the 5/60th in my brigade, and several of the other British players have companies from the 95th. One of these fellows fields the Light Division (or at least a brigade of it) so in my book, he can field as many Rifles as he can paint.

The funny thing is that you can tell that Mr. Whiner is mentally defeated before the game even begins -- when he sees green men, his visage seems to sag in a noticeable manner. Funnier still is the fact that he doesn't realize that if he simply puts his head down and advances his French column against my skirmishing Rifles, that I don't have an ice cube's chance in Heck of standing up to him in close order fighting. That's how you deal with the Rifles: go out and go get 'em.

Kick him in the balls and run. It's the only way with some people. In fact I find it's the only way with all people. Anyone you meet, just kick them all in the balls and run.

I occasionally game with someone who is prone to whining. I find little ways to amuse myself.

I try to put woods on his side of the table as it really annoys him when he 'collects' trees on his pullover sleeves.

Also he loves BUA's and so will try not to let him have one. Ditto with rivers.

I always mass my artillery opposite a hill as I know he has a compulsion to always fill a hill with poor quality troops and I'll have a target rich environment. He got really upset last time I massed a battery like that and said "You always do that" to which I replied "If you knew I was going to do it why fill the hill with poor troops then?" to which he answered "'Cause I always do that"......."Exactly mate, exactly". :D

Its the little things that keep me amused.

I prefer to remove some of my "advantages" and still win against people like that, just to see how the excuses change. If they say "oh, you only won because you were sitting in the city all game," I'll put all the city tiles on his side, then go for his flank where they don't affect things much. If he complains about all the terrain making it hard for him to manouevre, I'll put all the terrain on my side, use it as cover to move forward into position, then destroy him on the plains. If he complains the longbow on my Hundred Years War English army are too good, I'll put them in the second rank behind my men at arms, put my Welsh spear on my flanks to stop his flanking cavalry, and send my mounted knights straight at him.

I've come across a few like that over the years (usually the over-competitive type that plays to win rather than to have fun). I play to have fun, and don't care if I win or lose as long as I have fun. I hate playing people like that since it removes most of the fun from the game, so instead I get my kicks my destroying them without the "advantages" they claim I have, as it pisses them off even more. If you can manage to get them to completely contradict themselves ("you only won because you were holed up in the town / you only won because I was stuck in the town"), it's even better. :)

Kick them to death on the way to the after game pub. Take their money & dump the corpse in the river.

That's what I do & I find it works ok.

And if that doesn't work. Plan B:

Petrol. Matches. Whiner.

Mix all three.

Stand well back.

Unless you've got some smores, in which case, don't stand that far back.
